about

Recorded at 70 Hurtz (aka The Echo Lab) by David Willingham 1998. Never previously released.

This was our first time recording in an actual studio. David Willingham was incredibly patient with us as we navigated the unfamiliar terrain. During the time period between Fuzz Bites and this, I’d become obsessed with Marquee Moon and Horses and wanted to make something that had real intent behind it. So this one doesn’t sound as psychedelic as its predecessors but is much more focused. I didn’t have any desire to make whacky music during this period, but we did still get some interesting sounds especially with unconventional use of envelope filter pedals.
Finishing up these sessions coincided with The Argo shutting down. It felt like an era had ended. Despite our best attempts, we’d failed to attract much of a following outside of Denton. We didn’t know what to do with this album. We didn’t have the money to put it out on vinyl or CD and didn’t really want to go back to dubbing tapes in my living room. You couldn’t just release music on the web like you can now. There was a real financial barrier to having a legitimate release at the time. I was drinking too much and had lost some of my drive.
I wasn’t even sure if this stuff was good. Everything felt different. When Daron, Will, and I revisited it recently after many years, we were like, yeah it was good. None of us know where Jack Royal is these days. If anyone is in touch with him, tell him this stuff is available now and his guitar playing is genius on it.

Notes on the songs:
Magnetic Brain - We’d been playing this song live since our 3-piece era shortly after Fuzz Bites’ release. Daron had become a powerful drummer after 3 years of playing with us. Jack played fuzz bass, and Will played lead guitar. Their parts are incredible. I’d just been calling this song Magnetic. I was looking at Dave’s CDs in the studio. I picked up Maggot Brain and asked Dave if it was a good Funkadelic album. He’s like, uh, take it home and listen to it. So the title is a little nod.
Stop Breaking The Chemicals Down - This was the only song we didn’t track live. We built it up part by part. The structure and composition was so odd. Dave got some amazing sounds using room mics and pushing them hard onto the tape. Catch my references to Marquee Moon and R. Buckminster Fuller; stuff I was very into.
Stratoshatter - A country ballad for my Strat that I left at Club Clearview when we opened for Mazinga Phaser there. By the time I realized it was gone and could get back to Dallas, it was long gone. The intro part is us trying to sound like Thinkin’ Fellers Union, whom we all loved.
In This Life You’re A Tourist - This song best summarizes my mindstate at the time. I felt a lack of autonomy, like life was just something that was happening to me. “You spent your years inside a postcard.” The mood we created and the performance completely captures the sensation, and I’m so proud of this one, even 25 years later. I’m also glad I don’t feel that way anymore and haven’t in a long time.

Maxine's Radiator Denton, Texas

Psychedelic rock band from Denton, TX (1994-1999) that took elements of rock, soul, roots, and cosmic music and fused it into a sloppy, soulful, and schizophrenic sound based around Sean Kirkpatrick's songwriting. Former members went on to play in The Paper Chase, Spoon, Pinkish Black, Dove Hunter, and too many other cool bands to mention. ... more
