about

Released 1997 on Windago Records

Fuzz Bites On Your Neck represents the 4-piece band that played live regularly from 1995-97. We were approached after an Argo show by Lindsay Romig who said she was starting a record label (Windago Records) and wanted our album to be the first release. She had an 8-track cassette recorder that she brought for the recording sessions. Since our previous albums had been on 4-track, this enabled us to retain better audio fidelity when adding overdubs.
The album represents the songs that were part of our live set in this era. It included two songs, Ostracized From The Love Kitchen and Disco Ball Love Blaze, which had appeared on previous tapes but had morphed significantly into new forms via the process of playing them live. This would be our first album to be released on CD and to be available in stores rather than predominantly from us directly.
Fuzz Bites earned us some solid reviews and recognition regionally and led to more show offers outside of the DFW area. We suffered a setback when Joshua announced he was leaving the band to join Austin’s Spoon (whom we had recently opened for at The Argo). We reconfigured some of our songs to work as a 3-piece and asked friends in other bands to fill in on bass so that we could continue to play shows until finding a replacement.

Additional notes on the songs:
Ostracized - For Jack’s guitar overdubs, we put his amp in a bedroom, turned the volume and treble all the way up and positioned the mic over the ceiling fan. This created a weird piercing tremolo/reverb effect.
Disco Ball - The 8-track machine allowed us to do all basic tracking live and to incorporate improvisation into the recordings. For the end section, I wanted it to sound like 70s Isley Brothers with strings. Lindsay had a cello and knew how to play and we invited Centro-matic/Slobberbone’s Scott Danbom to play violin. Each track was recorded through an MXR Phaser.
Frankenstein Bref - Jack came up with the title for this song as well as the album title. We had a cool live version of this song that combined a mechanical post-punk rhythm with Stones-y rock choruses. We opted to transform it into a cold electronic track for the album version. Jack did all the programming on a mainframe computer. I added record scratches of Jim Morrison screaming “Wake Up!” from a Doors live album. Daron brought over a Moog. I can’t remember why I thought it should be sung in a British accent, but I guess it just felt appropriate.
Diablo - A modern update on the Crossroads legend but with God making a counter-offer that is rejected. To go from an electro song to a folk/country song, I decided a sound collage would be needed. Using a sound effects CD, I mixed sounds of airplanes, cars, trains, James Brown shouting “All aboard…Night Train”, horses, and the radio dial of my stereo receiver. On the instrumental sections, I played the spaghetti western guitar. Jack did the noise guitar counterpoint. Josh was doing the Iron Maiden two-finger gallop on bass. This is probably my favorite example of our influences merging to create something unique and larger than its individual parts.

about

Maxine's Radiator Denton, Texas

Psychedelic rock band from Denton, TX (1994-1999) that took elements of rock, soul, roots, and cosmic music and fused it into a sloppy, soulful, and schizophrenic sound based around Sean Kirkpatrick's songwriting. Former members went on to play in The Paper Chase, Spoon, Pinkish Black, Dove Hunter, and too many other cool bands to mention. ... more
